First of all, please watch ‘The Truman Show’ if you haven’t already. It’s expertly written and acted, plus this post will make a whole lot more sense if you do!

Of course, like the major theme of the movie, we’ll discuss:

Fiction vs reality.

Truman grows up completely oblivious that everyone but himself is a walking lie. ie, an actor playing the same character day upon day.

He never once challenges anything around him, but at 29 his yearning for exploration and a mysterious woman compels him to break out of this trance.

What’s actually real?

What’s it like to challenge everything you’ve known?

We’re tied to so many social, cultural constructs that often we just accept and live life according to them.

What we think we are or aren’t capable of… how do we know that’s really true?

The status quo dictates what we do. But if it doesn’t fit our values and identity, should we be like Truman and find a way out?

Maybe there’s a world/place out there that we resonate more with, it just takes a little bit more pezzaz to realise it, and break that cage.
