Long Live the Arts
The arts is completely overlooked.
When students are younger, we expect them to participate in drama, music and art. But then in high school, they’re encouraged to pursue more academic pathways, with many people like me dropping extra curricular activities for year 12 exams.
While people don’t say it, there’s an unspoken knowledge that the arts is ‘lesser-than’.
But there’s something about the arts that academics just can’t teach.
It encourages you to fail and get back on your feet. To be creative, experiment with different mediums and styles, and collaborate with others who share the same passion (regardless of age and background). To not be limited by rubrics and criteria, but to express yourself in whatever way that is.
Most of all, it’s fun, freeing. It transfers a feeling that I can’t quite pinpoint or describe, but it sure feels good.
Long live the arts!
