We’re practical creatures.

We learn by taking in information and using it immediately in a real-life situation.

This can happen quite unconsciously, where we start adopting certain mannerisms and slang from people, and for me recently - adopting a writing style similar to a book I was reading.

It was like magic. My vivid imagery and description suddenly became a whooole lot better, all because I was reading a book and writing my creative piece at the same time. Relevant skills and techniques transferred organically, all because it was an ACTIVE back and forth process.

We’re damn fast learners, but the only way for it to stick is if we KEEP using it, if we’re active and in control of our learning. Curriculum content doesn’t stick for the average student because:

  • there’s so much of it
  • it’s not interesting or relevant to the student
  • learning is passive in schools
  • the student can’t apply their knowledge (unless if it’s to circle multiple choice on a test)

So no wonder everyone forgets what they learn once they graduate.

If that’s the norm, why aren’t we doing anything about it?
