FUN!
What happens when we’re taught to first do the work, and then have fun?
It creates the absurd illusion that work and play are different, that work is work, and play time is where we can have fun.
I’ve seen it in primary school students especially:
Student: “I don’t want to do thiiissssss” groans and smushes their face on the table
Teacher: “If you finish then you get to go to recess earl-“
Student: SAY NO MORE
I’ve started to notice this more often as an adult.
When I run errands, do work, edit podcasts… I focus on getting the work done, and forget that there’s fun in the process too.
So let’s turn those ‘mundane’ tasks around:
I can go to the grocery store and treat it like the amazing race.
I can work from home and do yoga at the same time.
I can do chores while playing music and singing my heart to ‘I’ll make a man out of you”
Just because we don’t usually define them as ‘play’ or ‘relaxation’ doesn’t mean it can’t be fun!
