Assumptions
The one thing getting in the way of communication, more than anything else, are assumptions.
We project our thoughts onto someone else, spinning all sorts of stories without finding the truth out for yourself.
She saw me enter but she didn’t say anything, she must be ignoring me.
He hasn’t washed the dishes even though they’re building up, he’s obviously lazy and doesn’t care about making this mess.
When we assume, something dangerous happens.
We judge without evidence, we passively seethe, and it happens only in our heads. We spin all sorts of stories, without ever communicating it to the person.
Perhaps they didn’t see you in the room, perhaps they knew they needed to clean but had important priorities to deal with first.
Assumptions breed judgement, when what we really need is curiosity.
