“What’s so funny?”

“it’s funny that __ is eating it with a spoon!”_

“Eating what with a spoon?”

“A mandarin!”

“Oh you know what, that’s actually a great idea because it stops the spread of germs. That’s not funny, it’s smart!”


That’s the conversation between a grade 1/2 teacher and her students (who were giggling and distracted in their reading time).

I could not stop smiling, and A.D.M.I.R.E.D how she handled it. Instead of the go-to:

“Hey! Stop laughing, please concentrate”…

She approached the situation with playfulness, and even reframed it so the boy eating the mandarin with a spoon wouldn’t feel ashamed for it. Her tone was balanced, kind, and I could tell the students respected her for it.
