'Just in-case' Learning
We’re overstuffing our students with ‘just in case’ knowledge. Knowledge, that they’ll vomit out onto a test and forget shortly after.
So we have to ask ourselves… WHAT IS THE POINT?
Are we here to create talented trivia experts?
Our brains are wired to retain information RELEVANT to our lives - the other ‘nonsense’ takes up brain space and is quickly discarded.
So let’s change the focus.
Instead of forcing students to rote memorise facts, insisting this is what’s important… ASK them “What is it you love?”
“What lights you up?”
“What could you teach to our class?”
This achieves many things:
- It tells our students “Your interests matter, let’s try and work those into your learning”. They feel seen, heard, and motivated to work TOWARDS their passions
- They are ACTIVE learners, taking control of their education.
- It provides ‘interest based learning’ rather than ‘force fed learning’. The students WANT to learn, and will retain information as a natural by-product.
There is so much information nowadays that ‘lack of theory’ ISN’T an issue.
Curiosity.
Fun.
Questioning.
That’s what we’re missing.
