Working World
School is that rare place where the focus is on the LEARNER, you, the student. The teacher/professor/lecturer is there to teach YOU; to give personalised feedback, and work however slowly so you get what you’re learning. When you ask a question, they’ll meet it with 20 resources… Your growth and achievement equates to theirs.
Compare that to the working world. You have bosses, colleagues, clients who will give you the base information, but expect that you can work it out for yourself.
Suddenly, learning is up to you… Strange feeling isn’t it?
If there’s a skill we need to teach, it’s:
Learning HOW to learn.
This requires lots of introspection and forces students to analyse their own study habits.
“How do I learn best?”
“What resources have I used that make learning easier for me?”.
“What websites and resources would I recommend to someone else?”
It’s about teaching research skills, self-directed learning strategies - whatever is necessary for the ‘real’ world.
