We’ve already learnt one way for EFFECTIVE behaviour management.

Connect before correct.

But the other is just as important…

Separate action from identity.

“What Benjamin did was bad, but he’s not a bad kid.”

Whether students, colleagues, clients, family members… we can all do some pretty bad things, but that’s not because we’re inherently bad people. We’ve just made bad choices, which can spiral the more and more we do them.

By separating action from identity, we don’t confine ourselves to:

“I did X because that’s just who I am”

Instead of being attached to the action, we become attached to the solution.

“I did X, and I can change next time by doing Y”

There’s always a chance to change, to improve and right that past wrong. The more we separate actions from identity, the more motivated we’ll be to choose better actions next time.
