'I don't feel like it.'
But then…when do we actually?
To create something meaningful takes effort and time. To do something that we label a ‘hurdle’, an ‘inconvenience’ means actually doing the work.
And quite often than not, we subconsciously picture a mountain between us and the necessary task, and just don’t do it.
When this is coupled by the fear of how others will perceive you…this belief goes through the roof.
“What if other people judge me?”
“What if they don’t like what I have to say?”
…Are just some of the thoughts that quickly manoeuvre through my head when I’m creating ideas for my youtube channel. But it’s the constant output that slowly but surely makes this noise quieter and quieter.
Mel Robbins is a person I respect a lot. She’s a great public speaker and has introduced the ‘5 second rule’ (if you don’t know what that is, google it - it’s great).
The essence of her message is this “Motivation is garbage, you’re not going to feel like it most of the time”.
What I take it as, is… “Don’t RELY on motivation to pull you through the tough times”.
For me, my youtube channel was inspired by a semi-wishy washy motivational book (Tony Robbins - Awaken the giant within). Buzzing with motivation, I thought ‘Hey, how can I push myself RIGHT NOW?”.
And I believe that’s the key distinction. Motivation isn’t useful long term, but when you get that burst of it, use it as a trampoline IMMEDIATELY to propel yourself closer to your goals.
So what I’m trying to say is this.
“I don’t feel like it” is going to come up again and again. Especially when the work is tougher than you’re used to. If it means expressing yourself and inviting public scrutiny.
Motivation is a great tool…if it’s actually there. But most of the time, it’s not.
Waiting for motivation will not solve your hesitation.
Instead, rip it off like a bandaid, jump into the ice cold lake and finally just do what you fear in this moment.
