How to find your CORE values
A while back, I made a youtube video titled ‘HUMAN VALUES | How to live true to yourself!’. |
This is version 2.0. I’ve added extra information (labelled !NEW!) that I’ve learnt since then.
I stand by the fact that knowing your own values is ESSENTIAL. They really give us the power to make choices that align with what we ACTUALLY like! Think of it like a magic tool that maximises your everyday happiness.

Sounds too good to be true? Not believable?
First find out your own highest values before writing this off. Then commit to making tiny changes in your routine that complement them everyday!
I’m certain, that by knowing these as well as our Life Rules, you’ll see MANY positive results!

Time to find your own values!
I’d really recommend looking at Scott Jeffrey’s values post here. He steps you through how to find your own very clearly!
Another great resource is chapter 15 of ‘Awaken the giant within’ - would recommend borrowing this from the library.
Now grab something you can write with, and let’s start finding our values wooo!
STEP #1 - ASK YOURSELF QUESTIONS
- When have i felt the most fulfilled? Find concrete examples and write that down.
- When have i felt the happiest? Who was I with? What was i doing?
- What’s most important to me in life?
- Would the absence of an experience or action interfere with my quality of life?
!NEW!
What I didn’t mention in the video was that there are two sorts of values. Means and ends. The end values are what we’re after.
e.g when answering ‘what’s most important to me in life?’, you might say ‘connection, relaxation and money’.
The first 2 are end values. They’re the emotional states we want.
Money however is a MEANS value. It is a tool to reach the ends values we actually want. For example freedom and security.
STEP #2 - FIND YOUR VALUES (literally)
https://www.novatec-gmbh.de/en/blog/management-3-0-getting-to-know-your-peers-through-personal-values/
Have a look at this list of values and see what speaks to you!
If you committed to them, what values would give you greatest satisfaction?
!NEW!
STEP #2.5 KNOW YOUR ‘OTHER’ VALUES
Now we look at what Tony Robbins calls ‘moving away values’.
Above are the values we actually want (ie moving towards values), but we also have to move further from values that don’t serve us.
These include: Rejection, Anger, Frustration, Loneliness, Failure, Humiliation, Guilt.
Ask yourself these questions:
1. What stops me from doing what I like?
2. What above values do I want to avoid at all cost?
Being conscious of what values limit you is also part of living a fulfilled life.
____________________
Are your moving-toward and moving-away values conflicting?
e.g I really value growth, but also actively avoid failure. But to achieve one means overcoming the other - it means I have to PRIORITISE growth over failure!
Gain awareness of what’s pushing you back from feeling fulfilled, how could you make the moving-away values less intimidating? For me, it was making my ‘Dose of Rejection’ series where I actively seek situations that make me uncomfortable. Yay masochism! :)
STEP #3 - CHONK YOUR VALUES
Got too many values? Try using Scott Jeffrey’s method of chunking values together.
Find a common theme, e.g:
Flexibility, freedom and independence can be culled into ‘FREEDOM’.
STEP #4 - BE BRUTAL!!
It’s hard to cut down, I know, I’ve been there.
But cutting down to around 5-10 makes it less overwhelming to achieve your values!
Ask yourself:
- What value can’t i live without? Has there been past experiences that confirm this?
- Which of these values is absolutely essential to my life?
For example: I ABSOLUTELY NEED connection. If I’m not around people, I don’t explode/implode, it’s not dramatic. BUT I do start to feel unhappier, less motivated etc. And all these subtle changes signal unfulfilment.
STEP #5 - LOOK AT YOUR BABIES
What babies (values) do you realise you have? Are you currently giving them the attention they deserve?
Scott Jeffrey has this table:
Rank how well you’re living the value in your life right now. 10 being, you’re 100% aligning your actions to this value.
And make actionable activities for you to achieve more of them!
e.g VALUE: Health
ACTION: 10 min workout daily. Replace white bread with wholegrain. Get at least 7 hours sleep.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!
Yay! Congrats on getting to the end and doing the hard work to better yourself everyday :)
